Massage guns are everywhere now. Plenty of people around Lehi have one sitting in a gym bag or next to the couch. So why would you want percussion massage from a therapist? This close-up video from Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi shows how we use it on two areas people often struggle to reach well on their own: the calves and the shoulder blade.
What you’re seeing in this video
- A client lying face down on a towel-covered table.
- Slow passes with a massage gun along the back of the lower leg.
- The same slow passes over the back of the shoulder and the shoulder blade.
Notice the pace: the therapist moves the device slowly instead of jumping around.
Professional percussion vs. your massage gun at home
The device may look similar to yours. The difference is mostly in how it’s used:
- Reach. It’s hard to work your own shoulder blade or the back of your calf at a good angle. Lying face down lets a therapist reach those spots easily.
- Control. Your therapist adjusts speed, angle and pressure as they go, and steers around bony areas.
- Context. Percussion is one tool among several. In a session it’s usually combined with hands-on deep tissue work, and sometimes cupping or scraping.
If you use a massage gun at home, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and go easy on sensitive areas. Your therapist can also give you pointers on where it seems to help you most.
Who it’s for
- People who stand all day, like nurses, teachers and retail workers
- Runners and hikers whose calves feel tight after a long week
- Lifters who feel it in their calves and shoulders after training
- Desk workers with tension around the shoulder blades
Many clients find percussion helps tight areas feel looser and makes the hands-on work that follows feel more comfortable.
What to expect at Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi
Percussion is often part of our deep tissue massage. Your therapist first talks with you about problem areas, then decides whether to work your whole body or focus on a couple of spots. Deep tissue work uses slow, firm pressure to reach deeper layers of muscle, tendons and fascia, and percussion fits right into that.
If you’re working around a sprain, strain or other nagging issue, an injury massage may be a better fit. Either way, sessions include a consultation, the bodywork itself and recovery stretches. We’re at 3400 N 1200 W in Lehi, a short drive for clients from Saratoga Springs and Highland.
FAQs
Is percussion massage the same as deep tissue massage?
Not exactly. Percussion is a technique; deep tissue massage is a type of session. Your therapist may use percussion during a deep tissue massage alongside hands-on work.
Does percussion massage feel intense?
It can feel strong over tight spots, but it shouldn’t hurt. Your therapist will adjust speed and pressure to keep you comfortable.
Can I request percussion on specific areas?
Yes. Tell your therapist where you’d like it, like your calves or shoulder blades, during your consultation.
