“Sports massage” and “injury massage” can sound like they’re only for pro athletes or people on crutches. In reality, they’re for anyone who runs, lifts, plays a league sport or just wants to stay active without feeling beat up, and that’s who we see every day at Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi. This video is a three-minute tour of the techniques our therapists use, so you know what you might see when you come in.

What you’re seeing in this video

  • 0:00 Intro and cupping. Cups on the upper back with a massage gun working beside them, full-back cupping out to the shoulder and arm, and cups on the lat while the therapist moves the arm overhead.
  • 0:40 Percussion massage. Slow massage-gun passes along the back of the calf, then the shoulder blade, the back of the shoulder and the upper back around the cups.
  • 1:14 Muscle scraping (IASTM). A stainless steel tool on the front of the thigh, just above the knee.
  • 1:27 Hands-on knee work. Work around the knee and lower quad, with a close-up of hand placement.
  • 1:45 Kinesiology taping. Tape on the calf and Achilles, paired with cupping on the shin, shown before, during and after.
  • 1:59 Athletes in training. Strength work with a live readout on one side of the screen and cups along the backs of both legs on the other, then golfers taking swing drills with cups on.

Sports massage vs. injury massage

The techniques overlap, but the focus is different.

A sports massage is built around your sport and your training. Your therapist looks at how you move and what feels tight, then uses techniques like deep tissue, trigger point work, cupping and scraping, often while the muscle moves through its range of motion. Many athletes use it to keep training feeling good.

An injury massage centers on something specific that’s bothering you, like a sprain, a strain or an area that has felt stiff for a long time. It feels different from a relaxation massage. Your therapist may move you through a series of motions and use cupping, percussion, scraping or taping.

Not sure which to pick? Book either one and tell your therapist what’s going on. They’ll adjust.

Who it’s for

  • Runners, cyclists, hikers and triathletes
  • Lifters, CrossFit athletes and bodybuilders
  • High school and college athletes, plus adult league players
  • Weekend warriors getting back into activity after time off

Massage isn’t a substitute for medical care. If you have a new or serious injury, check with your doctor, and let us know about any recommendations they’ve given you.

FAQs

Do I need to be injured to book an injury massage?

No. If something feels tight or off and you want focused work on it, an injury massage is a good fit even without a specific injury.

Can I request a specific technique, like cupping or scraping?

Yes. Mention it in your booking notes or during your consultation, and your therapist will work it in where it makes sense.

Will I be sore afterward?

Some people feel mild soreness for a day or so after focused work, a bit like after a hard workout. Drink water and keep moving gently.

How often should I come in?

It depends on your training, your schedule and how your body responds. Your therapist can suggest a rhythm after your first session.
