“Sports massage” and “injury massage” can sound like they’re only for pro athletes or people on crutches. In reality, they’re for anyone who runs, lifts, plays a league sport or just wants to stay active without feeling beat up, and that’s who we see every day at Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi. This video is a three-minute tour of the techniques our therapists use, so you know what you might see when you come in.

What you’re seeing in this video

0:00 Intro and cupping. Cups on the upper back with a massage gun working beside them, full-back cupping out to the shoulder and arm, and cups on the lat while the therapist moves the arm overhead.

0:40 Percussion massage. Slow massage-gun passes along the back of the calf, then the shoulder blade, the back of the shoulder and the upper back around the cups.

1:14 Muscle scraping (IASTM). A stainless steel tool on the front of the thigh, just above the knee.

1:27 Hands-on knee work. Work around the knee and lower quad, with a close-up of hand placement.

1:45 Kinesiology taping. Tape on the calf and Achilles, paired with cupping on the shin, shown before, during and after.

1:59 Athletes in training. Strength work with a live readout on one side of the screen and cups along the backs of both legs on the other, then golfers taking swing drills with cups on.

Sports massage vs. injury massage

The techniques overlap, but the focus is different.

A sports massage is built around your sport and your training. Your therapist looks at how you move and what feels tight, then uses techniques like deep tissue, trigger point work, cupping and scraping, often while the muscle moves through its range of motion. Many athletes use it to keep training feeling good.

An injury massage centers on something specific that’s bothering you, like a sprain, a strain or an area that has felt stiff for a long time. It feels different from a relaxation massage. Your therapist may move you through a series of motions and use cupping, percussion, scraping or taping.

Not sure which to pick? Book either one and tell your therapist what’s going on. They’ll adjust.

Who it’s for

Runners, cyclists, hikers and triathletes

Lifters, CrossFit athletes and bodybuilders

High school and college athletes, plus adult league players

Weekend warriors getting back into activity after time off

Massage isn’t a substitute for medical care. If you have a new or serious injury, check with your doctor, and let us know about any recommendations they’ve given you.

What to expect at Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi

Every visit starts with a consultation, followed by bodywork tailored to you and recovery stretches at the end. Our therapists, Erik Brimhall, Caleb Larsen and Danielle Sampson, choose techniques based on what they find and what you want to work on. Sessions are 30 minutes ($70), 60 minutes ($130) or 90 minutes ($215).

We’re at 3400 N 1200 W in Lehi and see clients from across northern Utah County, including Saratoga Springs, American Fork, Highland and Traverse Mountain.

FAQs

Do I need to be injured to book an injury massage?

No. If something feels tight or off and you want focused work on it, an injury massage is a good fit even without a specific injury.

Can I request a specific technique, like cupping or scraping?

Yes. Mention it in your booking notes or during your consultation, and your therapist will work it in where it makes sense.

Will I be sore afterward?

Some people feel mild soreness for a day or so after focused work, a bit like after a hard workout. Drink water and keep moving gently.

How often should I come in?

It depends on your training, your schedule and how your body responds. Your therapist can suggest a rhythm after your first session.

You’ve probably seen the round marks on swimmers, lifters or a coworker and wondered what cupping actually involves. If you’re curious but not sure what to expect, this video is for you. It walks through a real look at cupping at Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi, from the lats and upper back to golf swings and the lower leg, in just under two minutes.

What you’re seeing in this video

0:00 Lat cupping with arm movement. Cups go along the lat and the side of the back. The therapist then moves the client’s arm and adds a massage gun while the cups stay on.

0:17 Golf swings with cups on. Golfers take practice swings with cups along the spine, shoulder and the back of the leg.

0:31 Upper back. Twenty or more cups on the upper back, a massage gun working right next to them, full-back cupping out to the shoulder and arm, and the gun on the top of the shoulder close to the neck.

1:07 Swing drill from the front. The same golf drill from another angle.

1:29 Lower leg. Cupping on the shin paired with kinesiology tape on the calf and Achilles, followed by how to book.

What is cupping?

Cupping uses suction cups placed on the skin. Instead of pressing into the muscle like a typical massage, the suction lifts the skin and the tissue beneath it. The clear cups in the video have small valves on top, which lets the therapist set how strong the pull is on each cup.

Cups can stay in one spot, or your therapist can combine them with movement, like moving your arm or having you take a golf swing, so the tissue under the cups is working while they’re on. You’ll also see us use a massage gun around the cups. Many clients come in for back and shoulder tension, and athletes often use cupping as part of their routine while they keep training. People describe the results in different ways; many say the area simply feels looser.

Who it’s for

Anyone with back, neck or shoulder tension from desk work, driving or lifting

Athletes who want cupping worked into a sports massage

Golfers and other rotation-sport athletes who like working with movement

Runners and court-sport players who want attention on the lower legs

Let your therapist know if you’re pregnant, on blood thinners, bruise easily or have any skin conditions. Cupping may not be the right choice in those cases.

What to expect at Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi

Cupping is usually part of a sports massage rather than a separate add-on. Your session starts with a consultation about what you want to work on. Your therapist then builds cupping in where it makes sense, alongside techniques like deep tissue work, scraping and percussion, and finishes with recovery stretches. Each session is tailored to you.

Sessions run 30 minutes ($70), 60 minutes ($130) or 90 minutes ($215). Our clinic is at 3400 N 1200 W in Lehi; you’ll find directions on our Lehi location page. It’s an easy trip from Saratoga Springs, American Fork, Highland and Traverse Mountain.

FAQs

What are the round marks from cupping?

The circles come from the suction. They’re usually painless and typically fade on their own over several days. How dark they get varies from person to person and visit to visit.

How long do the cups stay on?

It varies. Some cups stay on for a few minutes, and some are moved or used with movement. Your therapist will decide based on the area and how you’re feeling.

Can I get cupping in a 30-minute session?

Yes. A 30-minute session works well for focusing on one area, like the upper back or one side of the body.

Does cupping hurt?

Most people feel a strong pulling sensation, not pain. Speak up anytime and your therapist will ease off the suction.

Your lats, the big muscles running along the sides of your back, are involved every time you pull, climb, swim or reach overhead. When they feel tight, you may notice it in your shoulders, your posture or your overhead lifts. At Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi, one way we work the lats during a sports massage is cupping while we move your arm. This short video shows what that looks like and why we do it.

What you’re seeing in this video

A client lying on a massage table with cups along the lat and the side of the back.

The therapist lifting the client’s arm overhead and moving it while the cups stay on.

A massage gun working the lat with the cups still in place.

The clip was filmed in an open gym space, so you’ll see other tables and equipment in the background.

Why move the arm?

The lat runs from your lower and mid back up to the top of your upper arm. When your arm goes overhead, the lat lengthens. When the arm comes back down, it shortens. If the muscle only gets worked while you lie still, your therapist is only working it in one position.

Moving the arm lets us work the lat as it lengthens and shortens, closer to how it actually moves when you train. It also lets your therapist feel where the motion seems stiff. That idea runs through our whole sports massage approach: many techniques are done while a muscle moves through its full range of motion. Many clients find their shoulders and upper back feel freer afterward, though everyone’s response is a bit different.

Who it’s for

Climbers, swimmers and paddlers

Lifters and CrossFit athletes who do a lot of pull-ups, rows and overhead work

Pitchers, quarterbacks, volleyball and tennis players

Anyone whose upper back or shoulders feel stiff when reaching overhead

You don’t have to be a competitive athlete to book a sports massage. If you’re active, or want to be, it can fit you.

What to expect at Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi

Your sports massage is built around your sport and your goals. Your therapist will start with an assessment and ask about anything that’s slowing you down. They may use a mix of deep tissue work, trigger point work, cupping, muscle scraping and percussion, and may move your arms or legs through a range of motion as they go.

If you’d rather keep things on the table without movement, a deep tissue massage is another option for tight lats and upper back. Every session includes a consultation and recovery stretches. We’re at 3400 N 1200 W in Lehi, close for clients coming from Highland and Traverse Mountain.

FAQs

Is cupping with movement uncomfortable?

You’ll feel the pull of the cups shift as your arm moves. It can feel strong, but it shouldn’t hurt. Your therapist will adjust suction or range of motion if needed.

Do I need to do anything while my arm is moving?

Usually not. Your therapist guides the movement. They may ask you to relax, or to help a little with the motion.

Will I be sore afterward?

Some people feel mild soreness for a day or so after focused work, similar to after a workout. Drink water and keep moving gently.

Will the cups leave marks?

Often, yes. The round marks from cupping typically fade on their own over several days.

Your lower legs do a lot of quiet work. Every run, hike, game and shift on your feet runs through the shins, calves and Achilles. When that area feels tight or tired, some clients at Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi ask for more than massage alone. This short clip shows one combination our therapists sometimes use: cupping on the shin, followed by kinesiology tape on the calf and Achilles.

What you’re seeing in this video

The clip is a four-panel grid:

Top left: a “before” photo of the client’s feet.

Top right: cups placed along the shin, the front of the lower leg, with cupping tools on the table.

Bottom left: red kinesiology tape on the calf and Achilles while the client stands on a blue step.

Bottom right: an “after” photo of the feet.

It’s a quick 16-second look at the sequence, not a before-and-after promise. Every client’s results are different.

What is kinesiology tape?

Kinesiology tape is a stretchy cotton tape with an adhesive backing. Unlike the stiff athletic tape used to lock an ankle in place, it’s designed to move with you. Therapists apply it in specific patterns depending on the area and what you’re doing.

Many athletes like wearing it between sessions because it gives the area a feeling of support and a reminder to pay attention to how it’s moving. Research on taping is mixed, so we don’t promise it will do any one thing. Plenty of clients simply like how it feels, especially when they’re getting back into training.

Who it’s for

Runners building mileage on the Murdock Canal Trail or the Jordan River Parkway

Basketball, volleyball and pickleball players who spend a lot of time on their toes

Hikers coming down the steep trails around Traverse Mountain

Anyone on their feet all day who wants extra attention on the lower leg

If you have a fresh injury, significant swelling or pain that’s getting worse, see a doctor first. Taping and massage aren’t a replacement for a medical evaluation.

What to expect at Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi

Lower-leg work like this usually falls under our injury massage. Your therapist will ask what’s bothering you, may move your foot and ankle through a few motions, and will choose from techniques like cupping, percussive massage, scraping and hands-on work. If taping makes sense for you, they’ll apply it at the end and explain how long to leave it on.

Sessions include a consultation, the bodywork and recovery stretches, in 30, 60 or 90 minutes. A 30-minute session ($70) can work well for one lower leg, while 60 minutes ($130) leaves time for both legs and feet. See our pricing page for packs. We’re on 1200 West in Lehi, close for clients coming from American Fork and Saratoga Springs.

FAQs

How long can I leave kinesiology tape on?

Your therapist will give you specific instructions. Many people wear it for a few days. Take it off sooner if your skin itches, gets red or feels irritated.

Can I shower with the tape on?

Most kinesiology tapes are made to handle water. Pat the tape dry afterward instead of rubbing it, and ask your therapist if you’re unsure.

Does cupping on the shin hurt?

Most people feel a pulling sensation rather than pain. The shin has less padding than the back, so your therapist will usually use lighter suction there.

Do I need cupping to get taped?

No. Cupping and taping are separate tools. Your therapist will use whichever ones fit what you need.

Massage guns are everywhere now. Plenty of people around Lehi have one sitting in a gym bag or next to the couch. So why would you want percussion massage from a therapist? This close-up video from Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi shows how we use it on two areas people often struggle to reach well on their own: the calves and the shoulder blade.

What you’re seeing in this video

A client lying face down on a towel-covered table.

Slow passes with a massage gun along the back of the lower leg.

The same slow passes over the back of the shoulder and the shoulder blade.

Notice the pace: the therapist moves the device slowly instead of jumping around.

Professional percussion vs. your massage gun at home

The device may look similar to yours. The difference is mostly in how it’s used:

Reach. It’s hard to work your own shoulder blade or the back of your calf at a good angle. Lying face down lets a therapist reach those spots easily.

Control. Your therapist adjusts speed, angle and pressure as they go, and steers around bony areas.

Context. Percussion is one tool among several. In a session it’s usually combined with hands-on deep tissue work, and sometimes cupping or scraping.

If you use a massage gun at home, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and go easy on sensitive areas. Your therapist can also give you pointers on where it seems to help you most.

Who it’s for

People who stand all day, like nurses, teachers and retail workers

Runners and hikers whose calves feel tight after a long week

Lifters who feel it in their calves and shoulders after training

Desk workers with tension around the shoulder blades

Many clients find percussion helps tight areas feel looser and makes the hands-on work that follows feel more comfortable.

What to expect at Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi

Percussion is often part of our deep tissue massage. Your therapist first talks with you about problem areas, then decides whether to work your whole body or focus on a couple of spots. Deep tissue work uses slow, firm pressure to reach deeper layers of muscle, tendons and fascia, and percussion fits right into that.

If you’re working around a sprain, strain or other nagging issue, an injury massage may be a better fit. Either way, sessions include a consultation, the bodywork itself and recovery stretches. We’re at 3400 N 1200 W in Lehi, a short drive for clients from Saratoga Springs and Highland.

FAQs

Is percussion massage the same as deep tissue massage?

Not exactly. Percussion is a technique; deep tissue massage is a type of session. Your therapist may use percussion during a deep tissue massage alongside hands-on work.

Does percussion massage feel intense?

It can feel strong over tight spots, but it shouldn’t hurt. Your therapist will adjust speed and pressure to keep you comfortable.

Can I request percussion on specific areas?

Yes. Tell your therapist where you’d like it, like your calves or shoulder blades, during your consultation.

If you’ve never seen muscle scraping before, the first look can be a little surprising: a smooth steel tool gliding along someone’s thigh. It’s called IASTM, short for instrument-assisted soft tissue manipulation, and it’s one of the techniques our therapists use at Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi, especially for tight quads and the area around the knee. This 20-second clip shows what it looks like.

What you’re seeing in this video

A therapist using a stainless steel tool along the front of the client’s thigh, just above the knee, while the client lies on a table.

The therapist then kneels and does hands-on work around the knee and lower quad while the client stands on a turf floor.

A closer look at hand placement around the knee.

What is muscle scraping?

IASTM uses a tool with smooth, shaped edges to work along the muscle and the fascia around it. You may also hear it called Graston-style work or gua sha. The tool lets the therapist cover an area like the quad with steady, even strokes, and many therapists say they can feel spots that seem tight or “sticky” as the tool moves.

Scraping is rarely the whole session. In the video, it’s followed by hands-on work around the knee, and that’s typical. Your therapist may mix scraping with deep tissue massage, cupping or percussion depending on what they find. Many clients find the area feels looser and moves more easily afterward, though everyone responds a little differently.

Who it’s for

Runners logging miles on the Murdock Canal Trail through Lehi, Highland and American Fork

Lifters whose quads feel locked up after heavy squat days

Hikers and mountain bikers coming off the Traverse Mountain trails

Pickleball, basketball and soccer players who feel tightness around the front of the knee

If you have a new or serious knee injury, check with your doctor first. Massage isn’t a substitute for a medical diagnosis, but it can be part of how you take care of your body once you know what you’re dealing with.

What to expect at Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi

An injury massage feels different from a relaxation massage. Your therapist will ask what’s going on, then may move your leg through a series of motions while they work. Scraping is one option, along with cupping, percussive massage and hands-on techniques. IASTM is also part of our sports massage toolbox for athletes who want to keep training.

Wear or bring shorts so your therapist can easily reach the thigh and knee. Sessions run 30, 60 or 90 minutes, and every visit includes a consultation and recovery stretches.

FAQs

Does muscle scraping hurt?

It shouldn’t be painful. Most people feel firm pressure and some tenderness over tight spots. Your therapist will adjust the pressure if you tell them it’s too much.

Will I have red marks afterward?

Some redness on the skin is common and usually fades fairly quickly. Mention it if you bruise easily or take blood thinners.

Can scraping be combined with cupping?

Yes. Our therapists often use more than one technique in a session. Tell them what you’d like to try and they’ll build it in where it makes sense.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what’s going on and how your body responds. Your therapist can suggest a plan after your first visit.

A good golf swing asks a lot of your body. Your hips, back and shoulders all have to turn and then unwind in a fraction of a second, round after round. Whether you play at Thanksgiving Point here in Lehi, Fox Hollow in American Fork or anywhere else in Utah County, tightness in any of those areas can make a full, comfortable swing feel harder than it should. That’s why some golfers who come to Total Muscle Therapy ask for cupping as part of their sports massage, and why we sometimes keep them moving while the cups are on.

What you’re seeing in this video

A golfer with cups on his back, shoulder and leg taking practice swings, filmed from behind near a row of windows.

The same drill filmed from the front, inside the gym.

A second golfer with cups along the spine and the back of the leg taking full swings in front of a padded wall.

Yes, the cups stay on the whole time. Nobody is hitting balls in this clip; these are practice swings.

Why swing with the cups on?

Most massage happens while you lie still on a table. Golf doesn’t happen lying still. When you move with the cups on, the tissue under them is working through the same rotation you use on the course. Our sports massage approach often uses techniques while a muscle moves through its full range of motion, and swing drills are one way to do that for golfers.

Many golfers find this helps them feel looser through the backswing and follow-through. It’s not a swing lesson, and it won’t replace practice, but it can be a useful part of how you take care of your body during the season.

Who it’s for

Weekend golfers and league players who want to feel less tight on the course

High school and college golfers in training

Golfers getting back into the game after time off

Players in other rotation-heavy sports, like tennis, pickleball and baseball

You don’t need a low handicap to book. If golf is your thing, we’ll build the session around it.

What to expect at Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi

Your session is designed around your sport. Your therapist will start with a quick assessment and ask about anything nagging you, like a stiff low back on the back nine or a shoulder that tightens up. From there, they may combine deep tissue work, trigger point work, cupping and muscle scraping, and may have you move through swing-like motions during parts of the session.

If you’re new to sports massage, our post What Is a Sports Massage? covers the basics. We’re on 1200 West in Lehi, close for golfers coming from Highland, Saratoga Springs and Traverse Mountain.

FAQs

Can I play golf right after cupping?

Many people feel fine to play, but everyone responds differently. If it’s your first session, leave yourself some buffer before a tournament or big round so you know how your body reacts.

Will the cups leave marks?

Usually. Cupping often leaves round marks that fade on their own over several days. They’ll be under your shirt on the course, but plan ahead if you have photos or a pool day coming up.

Should I book before or after a round?

Either can work. Some golfers like a session a day or two before a big round, others prefer one after a long weekend of golf. Tell your therapist your schedule and they’ll help you plan.

Do I have to bring my clubs?

No. If you’d like to talk through a specific part of your swing, just mention it at the start of your session.

If your upper back feels like it carries the whole week, you’re in good company. Long days at a desk, the commute up and down I-15, carrying kids and gear, and heavy days at the gym all tend to land in the same place: the back and shoulders. It’s one of the most common things people ask us about at Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi. This short video shows two tools our therapists often use together for that area: cupping and percussion massage.

What you’re seeing in this video

A client lying face down with more than 20 cups placed along the back, the shoulder and the upper arm.

A massage gun working the upper back right next to the cups.

The massage gun moving to the top of the shoulder, close to the neck.

The clip ends with our Lehi clinic details. It’s about 40 seconds long, so it’s a quick way to see what the setup actually looks like before you come in.

Why pair cupping with percussion?

The two feel very different. Cupping uses suction, so instead of pressing down into the muscle, the cups lift the skin and the tissue underneath. Percussion massage is the opposite: a handheld device delivers fast, repeated pulses into the muscle. Using both in the same session gives your therapist a “lift” option and a “press” option for the same tight area.

Because the massage gun can work in the spaces between and around the cups, your therapist doesn’t have to stop and remove everything to switch techniques. Many clients find the combination helps their back and shoulders feel looser than either tool on its own. Everyone responds differently, so your therapist will adjust the plan based on how your body feels that day.

Who it’s for

Desk workers and commuters whose upper back and shoulders feel tight by Friday

Lifters, climbers, swimmers and anyone who trains their upper body hard

Parents who spend the day lifting kids, car seats and strollers

Anyone who wants more focused work than a general relaxation massage

Cupping isn’t the right fit for everyone. If you’re pregnant, take blood thinners, bruise easily or have a skin condition, tell your therapist before the session so they can adjust or skip it.

What to expect at Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi

Every visit starts with a short consultation about where you feel tension and what you want to get out of the session. From there, cupping and percussion are usually worked into a deep tissue massage, which uses slow, firm pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and fascia. Sessions finish with recovery stretches.

You can book 30, 60 or 90 minutes. Thirty minutes ($70) works for one focused area, while 60 minutes ($130) gives time for the whole back and both shoulders. Our pricing page lists the session lengths and multi-session packs. We’re on 1200 West in Lehi, an easy drive from Traverse Mountain and American Fork.

FAQs

Does cupping hurt?

Most people describe it as a strong pulling feeling rather than pain. Your therapist can change the suction on each cup, so speak up if anything feels like too much.

Will cupping leave marks?

Often, yes. Cupping can leave round marks that fade on their own, usually over several days. If you have a wedding, photo shoot or swim meet coming up, mention it when you book.

Can I ask for cupping and percussion during my deep tissue massage?

Yes. Just mention it during your consultation. Your therapist will decide where it fits best in the session.

Is percussion massage the same as using my own massage gun?

The device is similar, but your therapist can reach areas you can’t, like between the shoulder blades, and can combine it with hands-on work and cupping.
