A good golf swing asks a lot of your body. Your hips, back and shoulders all have to turn and then unwind in a fraction of a second, round after round. Whether you play at Thanksgiving Point here in Lehi, Fox Hollow in American Fork or anywhere else in Utah County, tightness in any of those areas can make a full, comfortable swing feel harder than it should. That’s why some golfers who come to Total Muscle Therapy ask for cupping as part of their sports massage, and why we sometimes keep them moving while the cups are on.
What you’re seeing in this video
- A golfer with cups on his back, shoulder and leg taking practice swings, filmed from behind near a row of windows.
- The same drill filmed from the front, inside the gym.
- A second golfer with cups along the spine and the back of the leg taking full swings in front of a padded wall.
Yes, the cups stay on the whole time. Nobody is hitting balls in this clip; these are practice swings.
Why swing with the cups on?
Most massage happens while you lie still on a table. Golf doesn’t happen lying still. When you move with the cups on, the tissue under them is working through the same rotation you use on the course. Our sports massage approach often uses techniques while a muscle moves through its full range of motion, and swing drills are one way to do that for golfers.
Many golfers find this helps them feel looser through the backswing and follow-through. It’s not a swing lesson, and it won’t replace practice, but it can be a useful part of how you take care of your body during the season.
Who it’s for
- Weekend golfers and league players who want to feel less tight on the course
- High school and college golfers in training
- Golfers getting back into the game after time off
- Players in other rotation-heavy sports, like tennis, pickleball and baseball
You don’t need a low handicap to book. If golf is your thing, we’ll build the session around it.
What to expect at Total Muscle Therapy in Lehi
Your session is designed around your sport. Your therapist will start with a quick assessment and ask about anything nagging you, like a stiff low back on the back nine or a shoulder that tightens up. From there, they may combine deep tissue work, trigger point work, cupping and muscle scraping, and may have you move through swing-like motions during parts of the session.
If you’re new to sports massage, our post What Is a Sports Massage? covers the basics. We’re on 1200 West in Lehi, close for golfers coming from Highland, Saratoga Springs and Traverse Mountain.
FAQs
Can I play golf right after cupping?
Many people feel fine to play, but everyone responds differently. If it’s your first session, leave yourself some buffer before a tournament or big round so you know how your body reacts.
Will the cups leave marks?
Usually. Cupping often leaves round marks that fade on their own over several days. They’ll be under your shirt on the course, but plan ahead if you have photos or a pool day coming up.
Should I book before or after a round?
Either can work. Some golfers like a session a day or two before a big round, others prefer one after a long weekend of golf. Tell your therapist your schedule and they’ll help you plan.
Do I have to bring my clubs?
No. If you’d like to talk through a specific part of your swing, just mention it at the start of your session.
